What are vehicle or car history reports?
Automated systems perform a vehicle history check by completing a VIN (vehicle identification number) search against DMV and insurance databases to find accident reports and title branding information.
These reports are great for showing the history of accident repairs, theft, flood or other damage for a specific vehicle.
Car history reports do not:
- verify who currently owns the car
- whether the person selling the car is actually the owner
- check for liens and verify outstanding balances
Vehicle history reports are just a small first step in protecting yourself when buying a car online or out-of-state. |

But I have a vehicle history report from Carfax or someone else - this car is OK to purchase, right? A vehicle history report, such as those from Carfax, is valuable, but does not verify a seller's identity, does not ensure that the seller actually owns the vehicle, and does not verify the authenticity of the seller's title.
Buyer Guardian services are much more thorough than those offered in a standard car history report.
