Can I find better car shipping service rates on my own?

Maybe. To really understand vehicle shipping quotes, you need to know a little about the industry.

You may get quotes from vehicle shipping carriers, or car shipping brokers. Carriers actually run their own trucks. Brokers book a shipment, then find a carrier willing to take the shipment for the booked price.

Potential vehicle shipping issues:

You can encounter two issues with brokers:

  1. they quote too low a price and can't find a carrier willing to take the load at that rate, and
  2. they may take longer than you expect to find a carrier to take your car.

Brokers make their money by charging you a deposit or booking fee. The actual carrier usually collects payment from you later, typically at the time of delivery. Your deposit is the broker's revenue. Even if the broker cannot find a vehicle shipper for you, either at the quoted price or within your shipping time frame, they will typically keep your deposit.

Carpe diem, as they say...

Unfortunately, a number of unscrupulous brokers have taken over the Internet, quoting very low rates. They know that they cannot actually ship your car at that rate, but they want your deposit - then they've "got you". This does not happen with all brokers, but it is a common problem.

Later, you may receive notice that they cannot find a carrier at the quoted rate, but one is available for several hundred dollars more. You are left with the choice of paying the higher rate or losing your deposit.
