See below the steps of BuyerGuardian.com’s secure vehicle transfer process and how it protects you when buying or selling a used vehicle online. The steps listed below apply to the Basic and Platinum plans; steps for individual services may vary. For more details, please read our FAQs.
1) Strike a deal
Buyer and Seller agree to purchase price and transaction terms on their own.
2) Place your order
Buyers or sellers can initiate BuyerGuardian.com Secure Vehicle Transfer services, either online or by phone at 1-800-416-8357. Each party to the transaction is notified and agrees to the terms and conditions.
3) Inspection & vehicle history report
BuyerGuardian.com runs a comprehensive Vehicle History Report and, if the option is selected by Buyer, performs a Pre-Purchase Vehicle Inspection covering over 150 points on the vehicle, which typically also includes a test drive. The report and photos are delivered to the Buyer, and a BuyerGuardian.com transaction specialist reviews the report results with the Buyer. Based on the results of these reports, the Buyer chooses to continue or cancel the transaction.
4) Vehicle title review & verification
BuyerGuardian.com collects the original vehicle title and other docuemnts from the Seller. Using a proprietary process, BuyerGuardian.com verifies that the title is clean , that the Seller really owns the car being sold, and searches for lienholders or others that might make claim to the vehicle. We also verify that the title is not forged, altered or un-authentic in any way. If there is an outstanding lien, we will administer the payoff and obtain all lien releases and title documents directly from the lender.
5) Escrow & payment transfer
The Buyer submits vehicle payment via wire transfer, certified check or auto loan certified check to BuyerGuardian.com. The payment is deposited into a secure escrow account. BuyerGuardian.com verifies the payment (we make sure the funds clear). Payments made with a certified check or auto loan certified check may take longer to process.
6) Vehicle pick-up and delivery
Once payment and vehicle title are in escrow (or payment has been submitted to lienholder), the vehicle is picked up via licensed and insured BuyerGuardian.com affiliate vehicle shipper (if services purchased include free shipping management), or the Buyer arranges to pick up the vehicle.
7) Release of escrow funds
At this point, the vehicle has been picked up; BuyerGuardian.com is still holding the Buyer's funds and the vehicle title. Vehicle pick-up is confirmed by either the Buyer (Buyer pick-up) or the BuyerGuardian.com vehicle shipping affiliate. BuyerGuardian.com pays the seller (or the lienholder, if a lien exists) within two business days of vehicle pick-up by the Buyer or the car shipping service.
8) Buyer receives vehicle title from BuyerGuardian.com
BuyerGuardian is holding the title in escrow, or will receive the title from the lienholder. Once Seller confirms receipt of payment (or after we confirm payment was delivered), the title and bill of sale (if applicable) are released to Buyer. If a lienholder is holding title, the car title will be collected by BuyerGuardian from the lienholder and sent to Buyer, typically within 30 days.
